We're talking about the 70's exclusively. From 1970 - 1979, Wonder was undoubtedly more popular than LZ, and undoubtedly more influential. Led Zeppelin's most influential albums (LZ I and II, which arguably laid the foundations for heavy metal) count as 60's albums. LZ's 70's work comes up to LZ IV, PG, and then a drop in quality, while Wonder has Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness's First Finale, and Songs In The Key Of Life. I think that takes care of influence.
I'll have to do some research for popularity, but I'm confident Wonder takes that too. Just give me a minute.

So what's the result?

Singles (US)
Wonder: 5 #1s; 12 Top 10s
LZ: 0 #1s; 3 Top 10s

Albums (US)
Wonder: 2 #1s; 5 Top 10s
LZ: 5 #1s; 6 Top 10s

Singles (UK)
Wonder: 0 #1s; 5 Top 10s
LZ: 0 #1s; 0 Top 10s

Albums (UK)
Wonder: 0 #1s; 4 Top 10s
LZ: 6 #1s; 6 Top 10s

Wonder beats LZ by a huge margin in US singles, while LZ destroys Wonder in UK album sales...hmm...

LZ release very few singles ....

Yeah. 12 during their career (and a few after). Why did they release Candy Store Rock? Immigrant Song was released against the band's wishes.

So, it becomes dull to assess Led Zepeelin by their singles.

I could actually see Led Zep taking popularity. Stevie's 1970s work still is more influential and acclaimed than Zep's 1970s work.

I do like him. I like Led Zeppelin a lot more, though.
