Going by the above listed criteria, Deep Purple, and The Mars Volta for that matter, are clearly not jam bands.

... the clips posted from 1969 show them jamming and following the criteria 40 years before the criteria was posted ..... and then clearly at the Montreux Jazz Festival where they have always performed as a jam band starting in 1969 to the present .... the only point is Purple depending on the venue and/or festival performs as a traditional/non traditional jam band and other times for only a small portion of a concert or not at all ... Take care

... and then there are times you add a horn section, a violinist etc etc ..,

I think that is the reason why they aren't on the bigger list. Top 5 on the prejam list is definitely appropriate for them.

Also, why is Oysterhead so high up on this list? They were only together for 1 year. Even with all the talent in the band, they don't deserve a near top 20 placement.

I wouldn't be opposed to this. Where do you think they should be?

... dont disagree with that approach just pointing out, depending on the event/festival etc .... there is a 40 year history of Purple doing jams as defined by the criteria .... Take care

A lot of bands jam (Deep Purple certainly among them), but there aren't that many jam bands.

.. don`t disagree with that statement have only been posting their jam material based on the criteria ... and how many would be familiar with their occasional use of a horn section in a few of their live jazz performances ....Take care

... and again from 1969 in full jam mode breaking into another tune with Blackmore and the addition of Keith Emerson on piano and Lord on piano and organ

Hey, this list is pretty awesome. Isnt ABB like blues/southern-rock though? I don't think Primus and Dave Matthews are jam material, but eh, that's just me.

Dave Matthews Band are actually one of the preeminent jam bands of the last 20 years, along with Phish.

I think some people are having having a hard time distinguishing between "bands that jam" and "jam bands".

For example, Zeppelin jammed with the best of them (30+ min No Quarters, 45+min Dazed, etc, etc), but they would have never played a setlist like this (or even drastically changed the setlist on a nightly basis):

Also Sprach Zarathustra >
Mike's Song ->
Simple ->
Midnight Rider ->
Catapult ->
Simple ->
Icculus
Simple ->
Mike's Song >
I Am Hydrogen >
Weekapaug Groove ->
The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday >
Avenu Malkenu >
The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday >
Digital Delay Loop Jam >
Fluffhead
My Sweet One
Big Ball Jam >
Jesus Just Left Chicago
Sample in a Jar

or this:

Bertha >
Good Lovin
It Must Have Been the Roses
Sunrise
Playin in the Band >
China Cat Sunflower >
I Know You Rider >
China Doll >
Playing in the Band >
Drums >
Not Fade Away >
Playing in the Band
