except for the last part , agreed with Floyo .... lasting popularity counts , Chains does very well on that, and yeah, Chains' has big influence on metal , more so than SG ..... heck Metallica cite them as an influence on latter albums ..... counts for something

and of course you count Jar of Flies also , as much of an album as anything, all albums of theirs reached multiplatinum, and a 4 song Ep went Gold , their live albubm went gold and unplugged went platinum too i guess .... chains are similar to SG in the uk , but they were bigger in other areas of europe, mostly the scandinavian region if im not mistaken , and yeah , ultimately, its correct for them to be ahead of SG ....

You guys are probably right about AiC taking influence, but you can't much stock in what musicians site as their influences. Sometimes they say "influenced" when they mean "inspired". What they think they have gotten from another artist may have already been done by a previous artist. I do think AiC broke more new ground than Soundgarden, so AiC has more potential for influence.

The reason why I think Soundgarden beats AiC in UK popularity is that in the '90s, Soundgarden spent 24 weeks on the UK singles chart while AiC spent 14 weeks, and of their albums that made the UK top 40, AiC's '90s albums (including Jar of Flies) peaked at 4, 37 & 20, while Soundgarden's peaked at 39, 4 & 7. It's not a big difference, and with the US' much larger population, AiC's probable advantage here would trump it I would think.

Should it really matter how bands take their influence? I've heard bands like Converge (Metalcore) describe bands like Depeche Mode (Synth pop) as influence. Two very clashing styles in Music, but who cares if it was a leading cause in getting them to write the stuff they write?

I'm sorry Floyo, but I don't understand what you meant.

Yeah, for some reason, after Rob updated the list in the forum, he never asked Lew to update the list on the main site.

I thought I'd share this amusing email.

Webmaster,

Your top 90s rock bands list has been tampered with. Someone added rap artists to the list, rendering it unreliable. I figured you might want to know.
