The 100 Greatest Trios

01. Cream
02. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
03. Crosby, Stills and Nash
04. Emerson, Lake and Palmer
05. The Bee Gees
06. The Police
07. ZZ Top
08. Rush
09. Nirvana
10. Beastie Boys
11. RUN-DMC
12. The Supremes
13. Martha and the Vandellas
14. The Isley Brothers
15. The Ronettes
16. Shep and the Limelights
17. Johnny Burnette Trio/Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n Roll Trio
18. The Kingston Trio
19. Peter, Paul and Mary
20. The Pointer Sisters
21. The Thompson Twins
22. Crowded House
23. Fine Young Cannibals
24. Motorhead

I can't think of any others. The Kingston Trio started out as three, but had two replacement members. They always performed as three. The Pointer Sisters started out as four members, but then went down to three.

They were indeed a trio (of David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright) for about a decade post-Roger Waters' split. However, Rick Wright (who was fired from the band in 1979 by Waters), was not an official member again until 1992/93 despite performing on "Momentary Lapse", appearing on their tour and all promotional material.

That shouldn't count. Heck, The Who were a trio from 1989 to 2002. But a true trio should be unaugmented by additional musicians.

I don't believe Floyd should count either, especially considering that Jon Carin and Guy Pratt were basically official band-members in all but title during that period as well.

The B-52s are not a trio. Not even close.

Yeah, that sounded weird, that Wikipedia article had them listed as a trio

They were for the album Good Stuff (made during the period that Cindy Wilson had quit the band) but that album is not well liked, there was basically only a 4 year period she wasn't in the band, and they've been augmented by other musicians since Cosmic Thing anyway.

I don't know if you want to count worldwide artists ... but Soda Stereo and Los Prisioneros are HUGE trios in Latin America. Probably 2 of the most important bands in latin rock history.
