Dude, I'm a huuuuuuuge fan of them. Grace Slick is my favorite female singer and I have every album from the classic lineup. I have Bless It's Pointed Little Head and Live At Fillmore East.
KISS clearly beat them by this criteria. It's actually not even close.

I'd go so far as to say they even beat Cream as well.

Beats Cream? Lol.

Well I dont see "instrumental prowess" anywhere in this criteria.
I know, I know, "fuck the criteria", but why make one if we're just gonna ignore it?

You'd be hard pressed to find many bands who beat KISS in the 'impact of live shows on their career'. Yeah I'm sounding like a broken record, but it's true.

The part of the criteria I'm actually talking about is "reputation within music circles at their peak". I'd like to hear Sampson break down Jefferson Airplane and KISS.

... actually would like to hear the one for Cream as well since their time together was very short and the last year was not all that well received in the live format with all the drug issues associated to the band ... Take care

The sticking point for me is live "reputation within music circles at their peak." The Jefferson Airplane did have a decent live reputation, but nothing too spectacular. They didn't "wow" anyone at Woodstock, that's for sure. And while they were good at Monterey, they were overshadowed by quite a few other acts who were on that bill. And yet they probably still have a superior live reputation to KISS within music circles. KISS is often considered a mediocre live band that masks their mediocrity with lots and lots of flash.

Bullshit. They arent any more "mediocre" than AC/DC. At least KISS attempted to show some diversity in their music.
AC/DC are the most limited, repetitive rock band ever (not counting punk bands), and they use energy and intensity to cover this up.
Same thing with KISS.

come on man. at least the song AC/DC kept playing was a good song to begin with. KISS may be the most awful "legendary band" in history lol.

I don't like KISS one bit, but I would probably go see them if I had a chance and the tickets weren't too expensive.

I really wish Sampson would come back. Bruce isn't around, so there wouldn't be that problem.

in short: Sampson was a gentle, well-spoken, curious and objective individual... while Bruce was a condescending, arrogant, biased and closed-minded cunt.

Exactly. Bruce was so fucking annoying. I loved it when Clash schooled him in the Elvis arguments.

Regarding Kiss.
They absolutely DESTROY Cream in consistency. Jesus, their career was, literally, like 15 times longer than Cream's, and they remained an amazing live draw through most of that time. Cream had a fierce live rep, but a lot of their rep also came from their previous work with other musicians (that's why it was such a big deal when they got together). So Kiss would probably beat them in impact of live shows too.
Influence on the evolution of live shows would be harder.

... you might note and it is rather well documented the 6 month old Deep Purple was removed from the US portion of Cream`s farewell tour in late 1968 for upstaging them (but then again Cream had only been together a little of 2 years) .... and Purple at the time had not yet honed their live reputation that was to come a few years later as one of the greatest live acts and concerts draws to be found on the planet ....Yes then became the opening act for the UK portion of the farewell tour and had similar accolades .... Take care

because to be a good live band, you need a certain amount of slop , and since PF were too damn perfect , they get punished by the criteria and move down a bit .....
